It can be very difficult to choose where to fish, particularly at times like this when the Río Grande and the Guadalhorce are fishing well but today I opted for the Grande. This river all but dries up in the heat of the summer although there are a few deepish pools where the fish can tough it out. At the moment it is just lovely and is carrying a fair amount of water.
It occurred to me that I should take advantage of the raised water levels to explore a stretch of river I had not fished for a couple of years.
The Río Grande gets a lot of attention on Sunday afternoons though not from fishermen in particular. Everybody seems to want to picnic here and the kids love to paddle around. So I decided to hit the popular reaches before anyone else showed up.
I managed a good fish on my very first cast and had another couple within the first hour or so. These were lovely things and I managed to beach them on the wet grass at my feet before removing the barbless hook and sending them on their way again.
A little later I explored the stretch which I had not visited in recent times and managed to catch one more decent fish and a couple of “teenagers.”
There were a few spent cartridge cases lying around on the ground and it reminded me that it was close to here, a few years back, that I was in danger of getting shot.
On that occasion I was wading through a shallow stretch of river in a light mist when I heard the sound of shotguns being fired nearby. Getting shot myself was not part of my plans for the day and it occurred to me that some trigger-happy bastard could fill me full of lead pellets if I wandered within range of duck shooters. So it seemed wise to make a bit of noise and so I loudly proclaimed as I made my way along the river that I was not a duck.
“No soy un pato!”
“No soy un pato!”
So there you go. I managed to avoid getting my ass shot off and can wholeheartedly recommend this method to you if you find yourself in a similar predicament.
Like my brother Sean says………… there will be no charge.
Hi Paul
Just found your blog and I’m loving reading your exploits in a favourite part of Spain. Each year we usually have 2 weeks based in Fuengirola and I get up to the 3 embalses for at least half of the time (while Diane fries by the pool)
Always get lots of sport fly fishing for the carp and bass although I’ve not had a Barbel yet! I’m usually there in September and the river Guadlahorce is on the bones of it’s backside then
This year in June we are only there for a week as we are touring the north (Rioja mainly as I’m in the wine biz). Hopefully the rivers still be worth a shot.
Would love to meet up and see a local at work and maybe crack the barbs
Keep up the great blog
Simon
Hi Simon,
It´s lovely to hear from you and I´m delighted you are enjoying the blog. It sounds like you know this neck of the woods pretty well. Just let me know when you are around and it would be great to meet up. I would be happy to pop down to the river with you and we will see if we can tempt a barbel or two. Take care and best wishes, Paul
Hi Paul (TV Star!!)
I will be getting into Fuengirola (from Segovia – not looking forward to that drive) late Saturday 21st June and as you have posted on one of your blogs …. Sundays can be a bit mad up there ! I went to the ressies one Sunday and it seemed like half of Malaga was going for a swim!.
I can fit in with your work and only fly back on Monday 30th so we should be able to schedule a meet up – I’ll get in touch before we fly out on the 14th.
Thanks and take care
Simon
Hola Simon,
That sounds great. We will have a chat nearer the time. Best wishes,
Paul
