It felt just a little bit odd today on the river. It was the first time I have fished alone for a little while and, although I enjoy the freedom this gives me, it has been fun to be out on the river with company.
The fishing was pretty good today and I managed to catch a half dozen or so fish before heading into Cártama to see if a letter had arrived at the post office (one of the problems with living in the back of beyond is not having post delivered).
All the fish took little nymphs, first a hare´s ear and then my own little pink job. One good fish charged off and managed to snag the line. I wanted to make sure the fish was okay and not tethered to the line so I went in after it. It had done a pretty neat job of transferring the fly from its mouth to an underwater stem. Nifty trick! Little excursions across the river like this give you a chance to cool down and also to see how deep the river is. For the record, at this particular spot it is about waist deep!
It was interesting to see some carp active in the margins. They were busy nosing around in the mud but showed complete indifference to me and my fly. I could have persevered chasing those carp but this kind of fishing is for those with a lot of time on their hands and who are undeterred by repeated refusals. Like the old man used to say, I felt like I was “pissing into the wind”.
Even though I was enjoying myself I was aware that the clock was ticking and I needed to get to the post office before it shut. I got there in good time in the end. Was the letter there? Of course not!
